Wayne Rooney says Mohamed Salah is "starting do to what Ronaldo did for Man Utd"

Mohamed Salah is beginning to play for Liverpool in the same way that Cristiano Ronaldo did for Manchester United, claims Wayne Rooney.

The Everton academy graduate played alongside Ronaldo at Old Trafford for five years.

The Portuguese star won the Ballon D'Or at United before moving on to Madrid, but was afforded freedom to remain high up the pitch by Sir Alex Ferguson.

It allowed him to always be an option in the final third and able to hit teams on the counterattack.

And Rooney sees Salah fulfilling a similar role at Anfield with his lack of tracking back allowing him to be a nuisance in attack.

He said in the Times: “Mo Salah is starting to do what Ronaldo did for Manchester United, in terms of just being there and not really getting back to defend but always being a threat so that if you’re a defender or midfielder playing against him.

"You’re terrified of him on the counterattack.”

Salah has been prolific since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017 and won the Golden Boot in record breaking fashion in his debut season.

He backed up that success by winning it again last season and leads the goalscoring charts for the Reds this term.

All in all the Egyptian has scored 91 times in 144 appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

His pace has proved to be a huge asset for Jurgen Klopp's side with their frightening front three among the best in Europe.

Ronaldo and Rooney once formed a fearsome forward line at United with Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov adding further quality.

Ronaldo once scored 42 goals in a single season at Old Trafford before moving to Real Madrid where he went on to become the club's all-time leading marksman.
