Wayne Rooney's car smeared with abuse after 'refusing to move it' at Christmas market

Wayne Rooney, the Derby County manager, had his Land Rover vandalised after leaving it parked overnight at a Christmas market.

Rooney's £150,000 Overfinch Defender was daubed with obscenities after being left abandoned.

It was also surrounded with orange traffic cones whilst a local stuck a “no parking” sign under one of his wipers.

According to the Sun, Rooney had left the vehicle parked on a street in Prestbury that that had been reserved for stalls for the Cheshire village's annual Christmas market.

The car was reportedly in a space that was meant to be for church bell ringers. The report claims that the 36-year-old refused to move it when asked by organisers and that he went to a local pub to spend the evening drinking with close friends.

Can Rooney pull off a miracle and keep Derby up? Let us know in the comments section

The Sun report a source as saying: “What a Christmas Grinch. The street was full of thousands of people — most of them families with young kids.

"Those setting up had to put up the stalls around the car and move the bell ringers to a different spot. Rooney must have known he was in the way, but he just cracked on with his night in the pub.”

Pictures circulating on social media show the luxury car daubed in abuse, including 'w****r' on the rear windscreen. Another wrote 'lose weight' on the car.

The market is less than a mile from Rooney’s home. The newspaper claims that the former England and Manchester United star "looked sheepish" when he went back to reclaim his car the following day.

On the field, Rooney's Derby side are continuing to put up a fight as they look to pull off a miraculous escape from relegation.

The East Midlands side have been docked a total of 21 points this season. The deductions came as a result of entering administration and a breach of accounting policies.

Last Saturday Rooney's side beat Blackpool 1-0 at Pride Park to maintain their slim hopes of pulling off a miracle.

Teenager Luke Plange scored on his first senior start to give the Rams some pre-Christmas cheer. But the result only bumped Derby up to four points.

They are still 17 adrift of safety with the campaign almost at the halfway stage.

Last week Rooney had said that keeping Derby in the Championship this season would be his biggest achievement in football.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: "It would be the biggest achievement in football for me, to deal with everything and manage to stay up, but there is a lot of hard work to do before we start to do that.

"If you don't believe [we can stay up], then we may as well all go home. Football is a crazy game at times, and crazy things happen.

"If we can make the fans smile for 90 minutes or give them the hope we can achieve something, we will do everything we can to do that."
