Wayne Rooney reveals the gap in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's Arsenal knowledge

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has opened up on how a conversation with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left him stunned.

Speaking in The Sunday Times , the former England skipper revealed how he tried to offer tips to younger players in the squad while away on international duty.

One of the players targeted by Rooney was Oxlade-Chamberlain, who, at the time of the conversation taking place, was playing for Arsenal.

But the former Everton Academy graduate was left stunned when his teammate said he did not know who former Gunners great Marc Overmars was.

"I remember speaking to Oxlade-Chamberlain in the England squad. He was at Arsenal," England's all-time record goalscorer said.

"I said to him, 'You're coming to the ball too much; you've got your back to play and you're making it easy for defenders.'

"I told him to come short, run off the ball. I said: 'Go and watch Marc Overmars,' and he didn't know who Marc Overmars was.

"I was like: 'You're playing out wide for Arsenal, how can you not know Overmars?'"

Oxlade-Chamberlain could be forgiven for not knowing who Overmars was, given he joined the Gunners 11 years after the Dutchman left for Barcelona.

The midfielder described his decision to leave Arsenal for Liverpool in the summer of 2017 as "the hardest I've ever had to make" but said he would offer no apologies for quitting the Emirates.

Joining the Gunners from Southampton in the summer of 2011, the midfielder made 132 appearances for the club.

But since making his move to Merseyside, has won the Champions League and looks almost certain to add a Premier League winner's medal to his collection - depending on the outcome of the coronavirus postponement.
