Wayne Rooney recalls being "given a clip" by his Dad in childhood row over money

Wayne Rooney has opened up on his childhood and recalled when his Dad 'gave him a clip' while the pair had a row.

The Manchester United legend has also admitted that he regrets the "bad" way he spoke to his Dad, Thomas, during his youth.

In his new Amazon Prime documentary, titled 'ROONEY', the 36-year-old - who is himself now a father of four - revealed that a fishing trip sparked a particularly tense moment between him and Thomas.

"My Mum would be the one to discipline us really, whereas my Dad would be the one for anything which went too far," the Derby County boss, who was born and raised in Liverpool, began.

"I've had full-on arguments with my Dad when I was younger which, looking back, I was bad for the way I spoke to my Dad, I shouldn't speak to my Dad the way I did.

"Then we'd argue and he'd give me a slap.

"I was going fishing, and I asked my Dad for some money because we were staying overnight, I think I was about 14.

"He gave me £1, so I remember looking at it, then looking back at my Dad and saying 'what? what am I meant to do with that?' And he's given me a clip.

"My Mum and Dad growing up, we were never a rich family but we had the majority of stuff we needed, my Dad worked really hard to try and provide for us as a family, and it wasn't always easy, and he'd have been thinking that I was questioning him and what he'd done [for me] by questioning him and the amount of money he gave me."

Rooney's documentary is filled with fascinating tales from his life, including an on-the-pitch story which has made headlines ahead of its release on Friday, February 11.

In one clip, the ex- England striker reveals that for the day Man United were beaten to the Premier League title by Chelsea in April 2006, he changed his studs "to try to hurt someone."

And that someone was former Chelsea captain and England teammate John Terry, who ended up with one stud in his leg but remarkably finished the game without needing to be substituted.

"I always wore the old plastic studs with the metal tip," Rooney added. "And for that game I changed into big, long metal ones, the maximum length you could have because I wanted to try to hurt someone, to try to injure someone.

"I did it, because John Terry left the stadium on crutches. I left a hole in his foot and then I signed my shirt to him after the game... And a few weeks later I sent it to him and asked for my stud back!"

The FA have since contacted the Rams manager about the incident.

'ROONEY' is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from Friday 11th February.
