Wayne Rooney puts brakes on Chelsea's bid to beat Arsenal and Tottenham to top four spot

Derby County midfielder Wayne Rooney has spoken out about concerns over football's plans to return next month.

All football in England has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, but all 20 clubs are in talks over how to safely resume fixtures in June.

Chelsea are among a number of clubs with something still to play for in the domestic season, with a top four spot still up for grabs, whilst the Blues are also in the FA Cup quarter final and the Champions League last-16.

There are reports of a June 12 return in the top flight, and that has led to the likes of Troy Deeney, Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose expressing concerns that the sport is returning too early.

And former Manchester United and England top scorer Rooney has now added his voice to those worried about an early return.

"I'm desperate to train and play again, but it feels like football in England is being pushed to return too soon," he wrote in his Sunday Times column.

"Our government says people can return to work, but only with social distancing in the workplace and that does not work in football.

"So I don't get it: until the government gives the green light to have physical contact, we can't train or prepare properly."

He added: "I understand where Troy Deeney, Danny Rose and Raheem Sterling are coming from.

"The concern is not so much for ourselves, like whether you might pick up an injury, but more about bringing coronavirus home and infecting those around us. People's lives are at risk."
