Wayne Rooney on the Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United X-factor that could earn him Derby County job

Wayne Rooney has made no secret of his desire to manage Derby County, and believes his experience under Sir Alex Ferguson stands him in good stead.

The Manchester United legend will lead an interim management team against Bristol City this weekend after former Barcelona midfielder Phillip Cocu was shown the door.

Derby gave Frank Lampard the platform to launch his managerial career and Rooney, who joined as a player-coach in January, has been touted as the next in line.

The former England hotshot became United's record scorer over 559 appearances under Ferguson and reckons the legendary boss is the greatest ever.

He wants to channel his inner Fergie should he earn the reins on a permanent basis - though knows he will have to do things his own way to stand out.

"I have worked with some very good managers and possibly the greatest of all time," Rooney told reporters.

"I am not going to say I am going to do it like Sir Alex Ferguson. You have to work with the players you have got and you have to manage players correctly.

"But there are things you can take from the managers you work with."

Rooney is one of the favourites to take over permanently though former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is now said to be in the frame.

The 35-year-old, however, is serious in his ambitions.

"I am ambitious, I want to go into management. I have been quite open about that," he concluded. "I wouldn't be an ambitious person if I sat here and said I didn't want the job."
