Wayne Rooney offers verdict on Man Utd transfer interest in Harry Maguire

Wayne Rooney has publicly backed Manchester United 's attempts to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City this summer.

United are currently facing a race against time to land their primary defensive target and the clubs are haggling over their valuation of the 26-year-old.

The Red Devils saw a £70million bid rejected by the Foxes who have slapped a £90million price tag on the central defender - a figure United believe is unreasonable - but they remain hopeful of agreeing a £75million fee plus add-ons.

Should they fail in their attempts to prize Maguire from Leicester's clutches, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could turn to Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti or Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly for inspiration ahead of the new season.

Rooney , who spent 14 seasons at Old Trafford, believes that Maguire would be a good fit for United according to reports from the Evening Standard .

Speaking to ESPN, he said: "I think Harry's a good player and over the last few years he's improved as a player. He's gotten better, and he's been a main player for Leicester City, but also for England. I think he'd be a good signing if they can get him."

On the subject of potential transfers, Rooney gave his thoughts on the future of midfielder Paul Pogba who continues to be linked with a move away.

He said: "It's obviously down to the club, to the board, to the manager, but I think also to the player. If the player wants to stay, he'll stay and prove what a good player he is."

United have reportedly begun talks with Juventus over a swap deal involving Paulo Dybala that would see Romelu Lukaku join Maurizio Sarri in Turin.

It seems like there is still plenty of movement to be had at Old Trafford and some deals could drag all the way to the 8th August when the window slams shut.

Chelsea are the visitors to Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season which returns on Friday 9th August when Liverpool host newly promoted Norwich City at Anfield.
