Wayne Rooney makes Nottingham Forest transfer request but faces Premier League competition

DC United boss Wayne Rooney wants to extend the loan of midfielder Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest, according to a report.

Former Derby boss Rooney is in charge of the Major League Soccer side and signed O'Brien on a temporary deal in March after a loan exit to Blackburn Rovers in January collapsed.

The midfielder has played 11 matches for Rooney's team so far, scoring one goal and assisting another, while picking up four yellow cards. The regular MLS season ends in October, but O'Brien's loan expires on July 16 and Rooney is keen for it to be extended.

That's according to journalist Alan Nixon, who says O'Brien has been "a hit" at DC United and Rooney is "asking" for an extension to the deal. But they will face competition, as Premier League new boys Sheffield United are said to be interested in signing him on loan this summer.

Other Championship clubs are believed to be keen, with O'Brien having proven himself in the Championship during his time at Huddersfield Town. He was part of the Terriers team that lost to Forest in the 2021-22 play-off final.

O'Brien's future at Forest has been dented as he was left out of the Premier League squad at the end of January, and the Reds have since retained their place in the division - and will be looking to strengthen their squad even further this season.
