Wayne Rooney makes Championship claim as Barry Douglas' future at Leeds United is questioned

Here is the Leeds United morning digest for Monday, May 18.

Douglas could stay, says former Leeds defender

Leeds defender Barry Douglas may reject the chance to leave the club, according to an ex-Whites player.

The Scottish left-back signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2018, but has struggled to make an impact at Elland Road.

It has been claimed that Leeds will look to sell Douglas once the transfer window opens.

But Alex Bruce is not sure that will happen.

Bruce, who played for Leeds between 2010 and 2012, told Football Insider: "He might want to see his contract out, come back and try to make an impression in pre-season because sometimes that can happen.

“You can have limited game time, come back to pres-season, really have a good pre-season, play well, catch the manager’s eye and the next minute you’re in his thought process. Seasons change from year to year.”

We deserve to go up, Bamford insists

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford believes the club should be promoted to the Premier League this season – even if the campaign is voided.

The EFL revealed last week that the tables will be settled on a points-per-game format if the season is curtailed, which would then guarantee Leeds – who sit at the top of the Championship – a place in the top flight for the first time since 2004.

Bamford, the Whites’ leading goalscorer this season, told LeedsUnited.com: “To be honest, if that’s the way it happens, I think we’ve done all we can this season to get up.

“I think rightly so, if it finished now we’ve been definitely top two, maybe the best team in the league all season, so I don’t think anyone can complain about us going up.”

Rooney cynical about football restart

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney wants to put the break on Leeds’ return to action.

Football in England has been on hold for around two months, but there seems to be a big chance of the game returning, which would please Championship leaders Leeds.

The Derby County midfielder told the Sunday Times: “I’m desperate to train and play again, but it feels like football in England is being pushed to return too soon.

“Our government says people can return to work, but only with social distancing in the workplace and that does not work in football.

“So I don’t get it; until the government gives the green light to have physical contact, we can’t train or prepare properly.”
