Wayne Rooney hands former Everton teammate trial against Manchester United

Wayne Rooney has handed former Everton teammate Phil Jagielka a chance to impress in pre-season as Derby County prepare to take on Manchester United.

The Championship side are hosting the Red Devils on Sunday afternoon at Pride Park as they look to kick off their preparations for the 2021/22 campaign.

And the former Blues centre-back has been revealed in the starting line-up for Derby, although he is yet to sign any contract with a new club after leaving Sheffield United earlier this summer.

Rooney and Jagielka lined up together on numerous occasions when the striker made his return to Goodison Park in the summer of 2017, staying for one season before joining DC United.

The following campaign in 2018/19 proved to be Jagielka's last in royal blue too, with the former club captain leaving upon the expiry of his contract before spending two years back with Sheffield United.

Earlier in this window, it was reported that the 38-year-old could be set to train with Bolton Wanderers to maintain his fitness in pre-season.

However, at the beginning of July, manager Ian Evatt confirmed that those planned had been shelved as he didn't want any distractions for his squad.
