Wayne Rooney goal: Watch former Manchester United striker score from behind halfway line for DC United

Wayne Rooney scored a spectacular goal from behind the halfway line for DC United in Major League Soccer.

The former Manchester United striker scored from some 70 metres out in the 10th minute of yesterday’s game versus Orlando City.

Rooney has scored from inside his own half before when playing for Everton against West Ham in 2017, three years after scoring a similarly stunning strike for Manchester United against the same opponents.

“I spotted the ‘keeper maybe a couple minutes before we scored and I’d seen that he was quite high,” Rooney said of his latest strike.

“I knew if the ball fell to me near the halfway line, then the opportunity would be there for me to shoot it.

“He was probably a bit further out than normally because they were in possession of the ball, and it was through them losing it that it fell straight into my path. I knew immediately I was going to shoot it and, thankfully, I got it right.”

Rooney’s goal proved to be the winner in the game and saw DC United retain third position in the Eastern Conference standings.
