Wayne Rooney gives verdict on Paul Pogba future at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney believes Paul Pogba will prove his quality if he ends up staying at Manchester United beyond this summer's transfer window.

United are intent on keeping the World Cup-winning midfielder in the face of interest from Real Madrid's manager Zinedine Zidane.

And Rooney, who won two trophies with United alongside Pogba during the 2016-17 season, believes the 26-year-old will remain an asset to United next term providing he doesn't move to Madrid.

"It's obviously down to the club, to the board, to the manager, but I think also to the player," Rooney told ESPN. "If the player wants to stay, he'll stay and prove what a good player he is.

"Behind the scenes, I'm sure they're working on whether to keep him or whether to let him go."

Meanwhile, Rooney believes signing Harry Maguire would be a good bit of business for United if they can secure his services from Leicester before the Premier League transfer window closes on August 8.

United are continuing talks to sign the 26-year-old England defender despite the Reds believing Leicester's valuation of him is unrealistic.

MEN Sport understands Leicester want in excess of £90million for Maguire, an amount that would shatter the world-record transfer fee for a defender.

"I think Harry's a good player and over the last few years he's improved as a player," Rooney added. "He's gotten better, and he's been a main player for Leicester City, but also for England.

"I think he'd be a good signing if they can get him."
