Wayne Rooney explains why Louis van Gaal is 'better' than Sir Alex Ferguson in one area

While Sir Alex Ferguson and Louis Van Gaal had contrasting fortunes at Manchester United , Wayne Rooney has made a shock revelation about the two managers.

Legendary Old Trafford manager Ferguson won the Champions League twice, the Premier League 13 times and five FA Cups with the club before retiring in 2013.

The club have gone through five managers since Ferguson’s departure, with Louis van Gaal having a two-year spell which ended in his sacking despite winning the 2016 FA Cup.

And Rooney, United’s record goalscorer with a whopping 253 goals, believes Van Gaal was tactically better than Ferguson.

What Man Utd star did to infuriate international teammates after defeat

“He (Van Gaal) was tactically the best I have worked with – in terms of setting you up in a shape defensively and everyone knowing their roles,” Rooney told TalkSPORT .

“It was just about getting the attacking side right as well as the defensive side.

“He won a few trophies but it didn’t pan out the way everyone would have hoped.”

United have somewhat struggled since Ferguson’s departure, with David Moyes the first to succeed the iconic boss.

Moyes ultimately struggled at Old Trafford, with the club sacking him after just 10 months in charge.

And Rooney, who was handed his Everton debut by Moyes before he joined United in 2004, has opened up on why Moyes’ Red Devils tenure was unsuccessful.

He added: “I think Moyes was a bit of a surprise choice but his record at Everton over ten years was great.

“He got them into the Champions League, finished in the top half almost every year and did a fantastic job.

“I think what Manchester United were trying to do at the time was bring someone in who had longevity in them as a manager.”
