Wayne Rooney explains why he was "p***** off" moments before famous Man Utd wondergoal

Wayne Rooney has explained how he was "p***** off" with the referee, Alan Shearer and teammate Kleberson just seconds before he lashed home one of the best goals in Premier League history against Newcastle United in April 2005.

The 36-year-old is now manager of struggling Derby County, but just under two decades ago in 2003 he was one of the most talked about young players in football after announcing himself on the world stage courtesy of a screamer against Arsenal aged 16 while playing for Everton.

Two years later, Rooney was nearing the end of his first season as a Manchester United player, where he had already made an impression from his very first game in the iconic red shirt.

The 2004/05 season was drawing to a close with United's title prospects fading with each passing match-week as Chelsea only grew in strength under the guidance of new boss on the block Jose Mourinho.

However, Rooney was to give the Old Trafford faithful something to smile about before the campaign was up, notching one of the finest goals ever scored in front of the Stretford End as United come from behind to topple Newcastle.

On the pitch that day was another English goal-scoring icon in Alan Shearer, of course donning the black and white of his boyhood club in Newcastle.

Shearer knows more than a thing or two about scoring thunderous volley's from distance and has since enjoyed a one on one interview with Rooney, the pair reflecting on one of Old Trafford's most iconic goals.

Speaking to Shearer for The Athletic, Rooney has since revealed he was actually seething with the officiating over the course of the game in question and was about to reach boiling point just before the goal.

The former United star told the Premier League's record goal-scorer how he felt the Newcastle players had been allowed to get away with a string of fouls, Shearer in particular enjoying some leniency from the man with the whistle, according to Rooney at least.

United's most lethal marksman added that he could see former teammate Kleberson being readied to come on in his place at that stage of the game, the power used for his goal clearly stemming from his anger at the situation.

"There was one bad tackle in particular — if it had been anyone else on the pitch, it would have been a yellow card! I was p***** off, you can see it in my face." Rooney added.

"Then I saw Kleberson warming up on the touchline, ready to come on for me. I was even more pissed off that I was going to be taken off for him."

During the television coverage for the game, viewers can hear the commentator stating how " Wayne Rooney might be coming off" less than two seconds before his wondergoal.

Rooney channelled his anger in the best way possible, bagging the equaliser before Wes Brown went on to win the game late on for the Red Devils.

Such was the level of Rooney's rage, his goal celebration was simply lashing the ball into the back of the net for a second time
