Wayne Rooney details captaincy of Everton heroes Dave Watson and Duncan Ferguson

Wayne Rooney has described the captaincy of Dave Watson at Everton as "all heart and passion" as he discusses the art of being a skipper in his latest column.

Writing in the Sunday Times this morning, Rooney has reflected on the players who have worn the armband during his career - including his first captain he remembers watching - Blues' hero Watson.

Rooney would captain Everton on occasions during his second spell with the club and says he learnt the art of leadership from all of those who captained him, including Duncan Ferguson.

He wrote: "The first Everton captain I watched was Dave Watson. He seemed all heart and passion, someone who was going to fight for you and when you’re young that’s all you think it’s about — leadership on the pitch.

"As I matured as a professional I realised there was much more to the job. You’re the bridge between the players and the manager, the players and the staff, the team and the press. Your value as a skipper boils down to your relationships. I put all my effort into those."

On Big Dunc's leadership, Rooney added: "Duncan Ferguson was really quiet off the pitch but on it was all heart and fight."
