Wayne Rooney criticises ‘poor judgement’ of England’s defenders after conceding against DR Congo

  • Wayne Rooney has criticised England 's defence in his analysis of DR Congo 's first-half goal against them in the World Cup last-32 tie.
  • Brian Cipenga scored an early opener for DR Congo to put them 1-0 up, with his shot beating goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at the near post.
  • The former England captain highlighted the "poor judgement" of centre-backs Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa before the goal, saying that the pair "came over way too far", which meant right-back Djed Spence had to shift across to cover, leaving Cipenga alone at the back post.
  • Rooney added: "There were so many elements in this phase of play where England were just off it."
  • BBC analyst Joe Hart commented on how Pickford was also caught out for the goal, saying that his body weight was "slightly leaning left" before the ball was shot to his right.
