Wayne Rooney captains Derby County on return to English football

Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was named Derby County captain on his debut for the club against Barnsley.

The 34-year-old was making his first appearance for the Rams since agreeing to join the Championship club on an 18-month deal in August.

Manchester United and England's record goalscorer was ineligible to play following his departure from Major League Soccer side DC United.

Rooney's inclusion was at the expense of the suspended Krystian Bielik and is the only change made by Derby boss Phillip Cocu.

The 34-year-old had not featured since DC United's Major League Soccer play-off campaign came to an end in October, but Coco was not worried about starting Rooney.

Speaking in the build-up to the game, Coco had told the Derby Telegraph: "If a player with the qualities, career and the experience of Rooney (is available), you have to be very happy and glad he is here, so I don't need a suspension to consider him in the XI to be honest.

"He's fit, he can start but he will need a few games. Expectation will be high when he starts playing but we have to give him a few games to build up his minutes and get in the team.
