Wayne Rooney can't wait to manage against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Man United

Manchester United are set to play Wayne Rooney's Derby County for the first game of their pre-season schedule.

United are set to clash with the Rams away from home on July 18 and club legend Rooney will be in the opposite dugout, having taken charge at Derby last year on a permanent basis after initially being used in a player-manager role at the Championship club.

Derby narrowly avoided relegation last season when drawing 3-3 with Sheffield Wednesday on the last day of the season.

Rooney has claimed it will be a 'mouthwatering' pre-season fixture between Derby and his former side, though.

“I’m really pleased with our pre-season plans ahead of the new season,” Rooney said.

“The game against United, a club I have a long and proud affiliation and history with, at Pride Park Stadium is a mouthwatering prospect and an excellent opportunity for us to test ourselves against one of the best teams in both England and Europe.

“In addition, we have some other challenging friendly matches and they will provide a variety of important tests for us in the lead-up to the season getting started.”
