Wayne Rooney blasts Manchester United players after putrid Watford performance

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has criticised the Red Devils' players after their humiliating defeat to Watford on Saturday.

United were comfortably beaten 4-1 by league struggles Watford - a scoreline which could have been higher had David de Gea not saved a penalty.

United were second best throughout the afternoon, having now lost five of their last seven matches in the Premier League.

Although United had more possession throughout the game, they failed to create much offensively whilst struggling defensively - giving Watford a number of chances to capitalise on their poor play. Watford had 20 shots on goal, to United's nine.

The result proved to be the final straw for executives as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's was sacked, with the club announcing the decision this morning.

And while the Norwegian is seemingly on the end of all criticism towards the club, Rooney has stated that the players must take some responsibility for themselves.

The Derby County manager said: "We’ve seen players waving their arms around, giving the ball away and it is not acceptable.

"With the players they’ve got they have to show more.

"That is the least you expect as a fan. You have to least be willing to put the effort in."

United have now confirmed that Rooney's former teammate Michael Carrick as interim boss for the next few games, as they're expected to hire an another interim boss until the end of the season.
