Wayne Rooney backs Liverpool to dominate for 10 years if they follow Man Utd example

Wayne Rooney has backed Liverpool to dominate for the next decade - if they follow Manchester United's blueprint.

The Reds are on the verge of ending their long wait for a Premier League title after establishing a 23-point lead over current champions Manchester City.

Rooney won five Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

The England legend claims Liverpool can replicate that success providing Jurgen Klopp remains at the helm for the long haul.

Rooney wrote in The Times : "Liverpool’s squad is young and all the key players are tied down on long contracts.

"They have huge potential to win more trophies.

"Klopp says it’s impossible for any club to dominate like United once did but he is wrong.

"There’s a simple way for Liverpool: let Klopp go on and on.

"United dominated because Fergie stayed so long.

"I think if Klopp, who is only 53, stayed at Anfield for the next ten years Liverpool would win at least five Premier League titles."

Liverpool were held by Everton on Sunday (2020 Pool)

Liverpool returned to action on Sunday as they were held to a goalless draw by Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Alisson denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin late on to secure a share of the spoils and Klopp was content with the point as the Reds inched closer to the title.

He said: "We should not take him [Alisson] for granted.

"Absolutely outstanding. That's what a world-class goalkeeper is - nothing to do for pretty much 90 minutes then he's there."

"The point is one we deserve," added Klopp.

"Everton were well organised so we had to run a lot but we looked fit and ready.

"Now we've got three days. Crystal Palace looked good on Saturday and we have to make sure we are ready for Wednesday."
