Wayne Pivac explains why Samson Lee has been training with Wales this week

Scarlets tight-head Samson Lee has been training with the Wales squad as they prepare to take on Ireland this Saturday.

The 41-cap prop has been called into camp this week to help keep the numbers up following an injury to uncapped 27-year-old WillGriff John.

Lee has faded out of Wales selection in the last 12 months, with question marks over his durability costing him a place in the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad.

But he’s back in camp this week, but only on a temporary basis and has not been officially called up.

“That’s just wear and tear knocks for certain individuals who couldn’t partake in full contact training,” Wales boss Wayne Pivac said of Lee’s presence in camp.

“We need the full compliment to be able to get we need out of the training sessions.

“It was a knock to a shoulder in a club game for WillGriff John. He’s been covering that.

“Will has obviously now gone back to Sale and Samson will return to the Scarlets.”

On Wednesday, Wales called up Ospreys hooker Dewi Lake and Dragons back-rower Taine Basham to the squad. The pair have been in camp for some time, taking part in training.

On their call-ups, Pivac added: “Dewi and Taine have been doing all of the training so it’s only right that they get called up and brought in like everybody else.”
