'Way to insult your clientele' – ASOS under fire for branding size 14 'extra large'

ASOS has come under fire for branding size 14 clothing extra large with customers accusing the retailer of "insulting their clientele".

An image of their sizing policy has been circulating on social media this week with a 6 dubbed extra small, an 8 small, a 10 medium, 12 large and 14 extra large.

However many people aren't happy, with one person even tweeting: "Isn't size 14 the UK average? Way to insult your clientele."

Birmingham Live reports that the initial post was made by Marina O'Loughlin who commented: "Dear @ASOS - since when was a size 14 'XL'??"

This prompted one person to add: "Since we started believing that size 0 was an actual clothing size.

"My favourite game is asking for a size 12 in the designer section of the likes of Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

"They have no idea how to deal with this request."

Scores of other shoppers also had their say, and it's fair to say the vast majority weren't happy with the ASOS size guide.

A spokesperson for ASOS said: "We offer fashion in over 30 different sizes, reflecting the needs of our diverse, global customer base and our ongoing commitment to promoting a healthy, positive body image.

"Based on measurements of some of our third party brands, the size XL on this product is equivalent in our sizing chart to a UK 14."
