High tide as waves crash near walkers at New Brighton

The Met Office issued flood warnings for parts of England with river levels at the Mersey Estuary expected to be higher than usual.

Flood alerts were put in place due to the subsequent rise in high tides with incident response teams monitoring the weather forecast and river levels closely.

The Met Office has provided an update of today’s forecast on their website.

It reads: “A cloudy day for most with light and patchy rain, particularly lingering over hills.

"Strong winds, with a risk of gales in exposed areas and along coasts, becoming a little stronger through the day.”

Gusts of wind in the region are expected to reach up to 29 miles per hour with a warning to the public to avoid low lying footpaths near local watercourses.

Onlookers and passersby getting their daily dose of exercise witnessed the dramatic scenes as waves smashed against the prom.

The massive waves were the result of a combination of high tides and strong winds.

The Met Office has predicted Wednesday’s forecast will be a cloudy and wet start with temperatures of around 15C.
