Waverley paddle steamer crash: 24 people injured with some airlifted to hospital

A total of 24 people have been left injured after the Waverley paddle steamer crashed into a pier on the Isle of Arran.

The incident at Brodick pier, which happened around 5.15pm on Thursday, sparked a multi-agency emergency response including HM Coastguard, a rescue helicopter from Prestwick, two Helimed, the Arran coastguard rescue team, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service and Police Scotland.

At the time of the crash, 213 passengers and 26 crew were onboard. 24 people reported injuries and were treated on scene, at the hospital on Arran or transported by helicopter to hospital on the mainland.

Passengers who didn't require medical treatment were taken to Ardrossan by ferry after being safely removed from the vessel.

Emergency services remained on the scene until 4am on Friday morning and an investigation is due to be carried out by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

The Waverley set sail again on the River Clyde for the first time in two years following an extensive refit in August.

The successful return of the world's last seagoing paddle steamer followed 'open heart surgery' it undertook over two months in Greenock after a crowdfunding campaign secured £2.3million to enable the replacement of the ship's aged boilers, deemed unfit for purpose last summer.
