Teams around the NFL continue to pluck from the San Francisco 49ers’ personnel tree.
The Washington Football Team hired Vice President of Player Personnel Martin Mayhew as a “high-ranking executive with a title to be determined,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
Mayhew, 55, will join an organization that’s restructuring its front office after winning the NFC East title this past season with a 7-9 record.
The 49ers promoted Mayhew to VP of Player Personnel in 2019 after he spent two years as the team’s senior personnel executive. Mayhew shared the VP of Player Personnel position with Adam Peters, who has held the job since 2017.
Peters was a finalist for the Carolina Panthers general manager job that went to the Seattle Seahawks’ Scott Fitterer. The 18-year NFL executive will remain in his role as John Lynch’s right-hand man, per the Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman.
Mayhew’s departure comes on the heels of several exits from the 49ers’ staff. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh accepted the New York Jets’ head coaching job and took with him offensive pass coordinator Mike LeFleur and offensive line coach John Benton.
Saleh’s departure netted the 49ers two compensatory third-round picks. But because Mayhew is not expected to take a general manager title, the 49ers aren’t expected to gain any compensatory picks when he leaves.
Mayhew, a former cornerback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills and Washington, spent his entire post-playing career in front offices. He joined the Detroit Lions’ front office as a Senior Director of football administration in 2001 and worked his way to general manager in 2008.
He was fired midway through a dismal 2015 season. Mayhew came to San Francisco after a year as the New York Giants’ director of football operations.
