Jan. 05--Waukegan police have opened a homicide investigation into the death of a man whose body was found on a street in the north suburb early Saturday.
Gaylord Davis, 49, of the 2200 block of Marshall Parkway in Waukegan, was found by a passerby about 3 a.m. at 9th and Prescott streets.
The Lake County coroner's office determined that he had experienced trauma to his body, and the Waukegan police are treating the death as a homicide, Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip said in a release Sunday.
Neither police nor the coroner would be specific about the nature of the trauma.
Since the new year began, it is the second homicide to occur in the community -- which typically sees yearly homicide figures in the single digits. Florip said that two homicides in just one week is unusual for any "sleepy little suburb" like Waukegan.
Roberto Romero, 23, allegedly shot Elpidia Munoz-Garcia in the face in front of her 9-year-old daughter at a Waukegan bar early Friday. He was arrested about 2 a.m. upon returning to Buenos Bar on Franklin Street after the shooting.
Romero, of the 400 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Waukegan, is charged with first-degree murder and being held in lieu of $3 million bail.
Investigators are asking that people with information about the incident contact a tip line at 847-360-9001.
