Naughty but nice, the Wau Wau Sisters are a duo of burlesque performers who have been something of a hit in their native New York (you have to remember that we are talking here about a nation still in recovery after seeing Janet Jackson's breast on primetime TV.)
The Wau Wau Sisters dress up as schoolgirls and sing mildly blasphemous songs, turn tricks (circus tricks), pile on the lesbian lipstick chic, and talk dirty and giggle at the same time. It is all rather tame, particularly when Britain's burlesque scene is thriving and can offer far more extreme and transgressive work - work that at its best isn't just a giggle and a dirty snigger but is a real examination of attitudes to sex and gender.
The girls get by because they are impossible to dislike, they can do impossible things on a trapeze and demonstrate occasional flashes of real wit - I enjoyed the country-singing act where the wholesome and the whore meet head on. But this show is at the white knickers end of the burlesque scene and lacks the subversive edge to take it further.
