Wattle Bridge bomb: Explosion close to police officers sparks security alert in Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh

Police officers have escaped serious injury after a bomb reportedly exploded during a security alert on the Co Fermanagh border.

A security operation has been ongoing in the Wattle Bridge area of Newtownbutler since Sunday evening with the road remaining closed overnight.

Belfast Live reports an initial device in the area was declared a hoax but during follow-up searches this morning a secondary device exploded.

Officers and Army Technical Officers at the scene were said to be lucky not to have been killed or seriously injured when the device detonated close to where they were searching.

Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew has condemned the incident.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP said: "This morning's bomb attack in Wattle Bridge was totally wrong.

"Thankfully no one was injured in this incident but we could have been dealing with a situation where people were seriously injured or worse.

"Those responsible for this incident have nothing to offer society and need to end these actions immediately.

"Anyone with information on this should bring it forward to the PSNI."

A PSNI spokesperson said on Sunday: "Police are currently in attendance at a security alert in the Wattle Bridge area of Newtownbutler this morning following reports of a suspicious object in the area.

"The diversions are in place between Newtownbutler and the border and on the A3 - Clones/Cavan Road in both directions.

"This may cause significant disruption in the area and motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

"Police are advising motorists and the public to report any unusual or suspicious activity in the area.
