Watford striker Josh King singles out Newcastle United star for praise and offers VAR verdict

Josh King has singled out Allan Saint-Maximin for praise and believes Watford's draw with Newcastle United was a 'fair' result.

The Magpies are still searching for their first victory of the season after playing out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Sean Longstaff fired the visitors into a first-half lead, but United failed to capitalise on a host of chances to double their advantage and were made to pay when Ismaila Sarr equalised.

Both sides pushed for the win in a frantic conclusion, and Steve Bruce's side came closest to snatching the three points with Jacob Murphy's one-on-one in injury time.

King likened the contest to a 'basketball game', and the striker believes the Hornets improved after the break to deservedly claim a draw.

Asked about Watford's first-half display, he told the club's website: "Not good enough. They were better than us first half, but I thought we brought a good game second half.

"When we got the goal, it lifted us and the stadium and from then on I think it was mostly us, but they had some good counters as well.

"We started the game unbelievably with the chance and got a corner from it, but then we let ourselves off a bit and they have good players.

" Saint-Maximin who can cause trouble to any team, but I think a point is fair and it could prove crucial in the end."

King believed he had notched the winner with just a minute to go when he reacted quickest to a rebound, but the Norwegian international's effort was correctly ruled out for offside by VAR.

The 29-year-old had no issue with the decision, adding: "I was offside. Three of us were offside, even I wasn't he probably would have given the other two because they were blocking the 'keeper's view.

"I've never had VAR on my side, but it was offside. That's why we have VAR."
