Watford stand by Pape Gueye signing despite player disavowing transfer

Watford are still planning to register Pape Gueye as their player on July 1, despite the midfielder claiming he will not be moving to Vicarage Road this summer.

It was announced in April that Watford had agreed a deal for midfielder Gueye, whose contract with Le Havre expires at the end of June.

The deal was viewed as a coup at the time, with Arsenal among a number of clubs to have scouted the 21-year-old.

Gueye is due to join Watford on July 1, but over the weekend he revealed that was no longer his plan in a statement given to French newspaper L’Equipe.

The midfielder explained how he had “had faith in a person who advised me poorly” and added that his “future is still uncertain”.

Gueye went on to say that “in consideration of the fact that the contract has not yet taken hold, I announce the end of all contractual links to Watford”.

The situation is now threatening to escalate into a full-blown transfer row between the player and Watford.

The Hornets are understood to still be planning to register Gueye as their player on July 1 and are relaxed about the situation.

Gueye, on the other hand, is keen to move on from Watford before even joining the club and that has already sparked interest.

Ligue 1 side Angers are one of the clubs keen on the midfielder, who has represented France at Under-19 level in the past.
