Watford make Leeds United admission as Xisco Munoz sacked

Watford have confirmed that Xisco Munoz has left his post as the club's Head Coach following their 1-0 defeat at Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets were beaten at Elland Road courtesy of Diego Llorente's first-half strike as Marcelo Bielsa's side ran out comfortable winners on the day.

Although Leeds dominated, Watford may have felt a tad unfortunate to not come away with a draw when Christian Kabasele's finish was ruled out for a foul on Liam Cooper.

But the Whites had a number of chances to add a second goal, with Tyler Roberts, Stuart Dallas and Raphinha all missing good chances to make the scoreline look more comfortable.

Nonetheless, the result leaves the Hornets in 14th with seven points from their opening seven matches, whilst Leeds are up to 16th following their first win of the campaign.

Despite what seemed like a positive start, Munoz has become the first Premier League manager to lose his job so far this season.

Watford issued this statement on their club website on Sunday morning: "Watford FC confirms Xisco Muñoz has left his post as the club's Head Coach.

"The Board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving. The Hornets will always be grateful to Xisco for the part he played in securing last season's promotion and wish him well for his future career in football.

"No further club comment will be available until the imminent announcement of a new Head Coach."

Having joined the Hornets in December 2020, Munoz guided the club back to the top-flight at the first time of asking, winning promotion alongside Brentford and Norwich City.

They did make a fast start to the season with a 3-2 win against Aston Villa thanks to goals from Emmanuel Dennis, Ismaila Sarr and Cucho Hernandez.

But three successive defeats had put Munoz under some pressure but Watford earned a 3-1 victory at Norwich, before drawing 1-1 at home to Newcastle United last weekend.

However, the defeat at Leeds proved to be the Spaniard's final game in charge and he departs the club with a 58% win rate from 36 matches.
