Watford FA Cup glory will top La Liga title with Barcelona for Gerard Deulofeu

Gerard Deulofeu has helped Barcelona win La Liga, yet reckons this season with Watford will be the best of his life if the Hornets continue to buzz.

Deulofeu scored both goals in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Huddersfield to take his tally for the season to 11.

It is the most prolific campaign of a career which also includes two spells at Barca, two different stints with Everton, plus spells on loan to Sevilla and AC Milan and shows how he is thriving in a central attacking role, after previously mainly being a winger.

Now the Spaniard is determined to bag more goals as Javi Gracia’s seventh-placed side chase Europe in both the top-flight and FA Cup.

He came off the bench against Wolves in the semi-final a fortnight ago to score with a superb right-foot curler to spark Watford’s amazing comeback before slotting an extra-time winner.

Treble-chasing Manchester City now stand in Watford’s way in the final on May 18.

But Deulofeu is determined to keep his place in the side and fire them to more glory after making his 28th appearance this term.

He said: “It will be the best season if we win the cup and finish seventh in the Premier League.

“I am feeling good and playing striker with free movement and a lot of space. That is the reason I feel good and I can score more goals.

“I played on the wing before and on the wing you have to go back a little bit and play further from the goal. This season is different and I am nearer to the goal.

"I came here to play regularly and play a lot of games. My career is long because this is my sixth year in a top division. Every time, I am travelling one way or another.

“Every player wants to play every minute but sometimes I was in really good big teams and when you are young that is difficult. But I am really happy here, playing regularly, and you can see it on the pitch and that is the reason I am in this form.”

Deulofeu was a class apart from already-relegated Huddersfield, who show admirable desire but a distinct lack of quality.

He opened the scoring in the fifth minute with an inch-perfect right-foot curler, in off the post, which was remarkably similar to his superb first goal at Wembley. The Spaniard then fired in a late second before Karlan Grant’s injury-time consolation header made little difference.

Deulofeu is now targeting six more points from home games this week against Southampton and Wolves.

An £11million signing from Barca last summer after a successful loan, the 25-year-old added: “The first goal was really good, it was a little bit similar to the semi-final. The semi-final was a little bit more beautiful.

“We are so happy to play one final and be fighting for a trophy. But first of all we want to finish seventh and we have to think first about these last four games. Otherwise we will go to the final in not the best way. Maybe this week can decide the season.”
