Watford chase Chelsea defender Baba Rahman ahead of domestic transfer deadline

Watford are one of a number of Championship clubs interested in signing Chelsea defender Baba Rahman on loan.

Rahman joined Chelsea in 2015, but he has been loaned out repeatedly since then and most recently came back from a spell at Mallorca.

The left-back had expected to move before Monday’s international deadline, however that failed to happen and as a result he is likely to head to the Championship on loan.

The domestic window in England does not shut until October 16 and Watford, plus other Championship sides, are keen to sign Rahman for the year.

Watford are in the market for a left-back and also have an interest in Leeds United’s Barry Douglas, who looks set to leave Elland Road.

The Hornets are currently happy with the make-up of their squad following the closing of the international window, but that could change over the coming days given there is Premier League interest in Craig Dawson, Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney.

The prospect of Dawson leaving is an intriguing one as it could mean Watford dip into the market for a new centre-back, with their training ground neighbours Arsenal looking to loan one out.

Teenager William Saliba (below) saw his deadline-day loan move to Saint-Etienne collapse and the Gunners are considering sending him to a Championship club.

Watford were interested in Saliba when Arsenal signed him last summer from Saint-Etienne and as a result they could make a viable destination for the young centre-back to get more game time.

Arsenal want to carefully manage Saliba’s development given the fact he is so young and cost them £27million.

Championship interest in the Frenchman is likely to be high given his potential, with Norwich City one of the clubs thought to be monitoring the situation closely ahead of the window closing next week.
