Watford CEO: Relegation and pandemic almost broke us - promotion is my finest moment in football

Watford chairman and CEO Scott Duxbury says their promotion back to the Premier League is the biggest achievement of his career after revealing relegation “nearly brought the club to its knees”.

The Hornets sealed an immediate return to the top flight on Saturday by beating Millwall 1-0 at Vicarage Road.

It means they bounced back up at the first time of asking and Duxbury could not hide his delight afterwards, particularly given the financial burden the Covid-19 pandemic has placed on the club.

“It’s the finest moment I have had in football,” Duxbury told Watford’s streaming show, Hive Live.

“Relegation’s tough as it is, but when you have a worldwide pandemic, you have the coronavirus, it nearly brought the club to its knees.

“And to be able to navigate through that, and come back and be back in the Premier League, it’s everything. This club means everything to me.

“There were moments where it was touch and go, whether we though we could actually continue.

“But we managed to find a way through, we managed to adapt, and we’ve got back to the Premier League - which is everything for this football club.

“It’s the biggest achievement in my career.”
