The shipping of watermelons in Tomisato, Chiba Prefecture, known as the nation's foremost watermelon production area, is approaching its peak season.
They boast a high sugar content, which is said to be the result of being grown during a period where the temperature difference between night and day is stark.
Roughly 840,000 units produced by about 180 farmers in the city and are slated to be shipped this season. During the shipping process, each fruit is struck lightly to inspect for cavities, and its weight and shape are carefully checked.
"We've been blessed with good weather since May and the results are excellent," producer Hiroyasu Shinohara, 60, said. "I hope that just by eating these delicious watermelons, moods will be brightened." Shipping will be focused mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area and is expected to last until mid-July.
