(Picture: Jeremy Selwyn)The Waterloo and City line is to partially reopen next week after being forced to close because of staff shortages caused by Covid isolation.
The tube line, which runs between Waterloo and Bank, was forced to close on December 23. Drivers on the line also drive trains on the much busier Central line, so it was decided the focus should be on the latter.
After ‘Plan B’ was introduced in England, updating government guidance to work from home, passenger numbers on the line also collapsed.
The two-stop route, referred to as ‘The Drain’, will partially reopen from 6am on January 10, according to the TfL website.
The service is expected to run on peak weekday hours, as was the case from June to October last year. In November, the service resumed full service on weekdays before closing again.
The key commuter line will take on added importance later this month, as TfL plans to close a section of the Northern line for four months.
The Bank branch of the Northern line between Kennington and Moorgate will close from January 15 to mid-May to allow for capacity upgrades to Bank station.
Trains will also be less frequent on the sections of the lines that will remain open. TfL says the closure is necessary for a new railway tunnel and platform at the busy station.
A new temporary bus route will run during the closure, between Oval and Moorgate.
