Waterfront's newest skyscraper with views across the Mersey set to be approved

A new skyscraper on Liverpool's waterfront could be approved by the city council next week.

The 17 storey apartment block on Waterloo Road, just north of the city centre, is set to include a serviced lobby, a gym and views out on to the Mersey .

If approved by planners it would be the latest in a series of new high buildings just north of the city centre .

A committee report describes the building, which would sit near the corner with Paisley Street, as having a 'contemporary' design and says it will be formed of a mix of differently sized apartments.

The report says: "The main resident’s entrance to the building is from Waterloo Road, which leads into an entrance lobby with concierge, from which access is gained to the residents’ gym, cycle store and shared refuse storage at ground floor and the residents’ lounge at the mezzanine level."

The area where the building is proposed, now called Pumpfields by Liverpool council , has already seen a number of tall buildings approved by planners in recent years.

They include nearby Leeds Street's three Infinity Towers, which would vary between 27 and 39 storeys, and the 34-storey Lexington Tower.

Currently a mix of industrial buildings and open land, the council hopes a series of new developments in Pumpfields can see the area become a new residential and commercial area in Liverpool .

But problems with some developments in the area, most notoriously the now demolished North Point project , have caused problems for regeneration of the area.

A council document outlining its goals for Pumpfields says a lack of space in the city centre is pushing developers outards.

The draft spatial regeneration framework for the area says: "Increasing development pressure in the city centre is pushing developers and investors towards opportunities in the peripheral areas leading to a growing interest in Pumpfields.

"The challenge is to ensure that Pumpfields becomes a successful area in its own right and makes a positive contribution to the growth and vibrancy of the wider city. "
