Waterford supermarket forced to respond to false rumours of coronavirus outbreak amongst staff

A Waterford supermarket has been forced to clear up false rumours locally as it confirmed none of its staff have tested positive for coronavirus.

Eurospar in Abbeyside was made aware of talk in the community that some of its staff members had contracted the virus.

However, the shop was quick to point out that these rumours were false and no staff are sick or are showing any symptoms.

A spokesperson for the shop said: "Contrary to rumours that have been brought to our attention, we would like to confirm that none of our staff at Eurospar Abbeyside currently have, or are showing symptoms of the Covid-19 virus.

"Our focus remains on providing an essential high quality service to our local community while ensuring the health and wellbeing of our valued staff."

The World Health Organisation have been clear that "no reported cases of COVID-19 have been linked to contaminated food" and there have been no outbreaks worldwide linked to supermarkets.

It adds: "The main risk to shoppers is coming into contact with an infected person."
