Waterford's Philip Mahony retires from inter-county hurling

Waterford have been dealt a blow ahead of the new season after Philip Mahony retired from inter-county hurling today.

The Ballygunner clubman, 29, had been a key man for the Deise in a career that saw him win a Munster title, an Allianz Hurling League medal - as well as featuring in the 2017 All-Ireland final.

It comes as a blow for new boss Liam Cahill ahead of their Allianz League opener against Cork in Walsh Park on January 26th.

"Philip Mahony has tonight announced his retirement from inter-county hurling," Waterford GAA tweeted.

"Waterford GAA would like to thank Philip for his commitment and dedication to Waterford hurling over the last number of years. We wish him all the best for the future."
