Waterford players and staff left stunned after being laid off by email

Waterford's players and staff were stunned to be laid off this evening - by email.

The club mailed players and management to say it was a necessary step to safeguard its future in the wake of Covid-19.

In the letter, Waterford said it had been ‘hit hard financially’ since their last game against Shamrock Rovers on February 24.

Blues boss Alan Reynolds claimed he found out about the temporary layoffs from his players.

And Reynolds - who nearly quit over the winter - told RTE: "I understand cuts are necessary, but is this the way to do it?

Waterford follow in the footsteps of St Pat’s - who recently announced three-month layoffs - and Sligo Rovers.
