Waterford goalkeeper Stephen O'Keefe announces inter-county retirement

Stephen O'Keefe has revealed that he won't be returning to the Waterford hurlers in 2022, ending his inter-county career.

The Ballygunner goalkeeper stepped away from the panel this year after their 2020 All-Ireland defeat to Limerick, with the 30-year-old claiming "that chapter is finished for me".

Speaking in the wake of helping his Ballygunner club to an eighth Waterford county title in a row yesterday, the 2017 All-Star goalkeeper is focusing on his club after stepping away from Liam Cahill's men.

"No, no, we won't. That's finished for me now," O'Keeffe told TG4 in his post-match interview.

"In fairness, the two lads, Shaun (O'Brien) and Billy (Nolan), are doing brilliant in there now so Jesus, there'd be no guarantees that even if I went back now that there'd be a place for me at this stage.

"I've given it a good nine or 10 years now and I think that chapter is finished for myself. Really enjoying playing with the brothers and some of the childhood friends in Ballygunner, it's after giving me a real lease of life so I'm really enjoying it and I'm not ready to give it up just yet."
