Waterford girl's football takes incredible 200km trip washing up in Wales seven days after it was lost at sea

An Irish girl's gaelic football was found washed up on a Welsh beach on Sunday - seven days after the tide had taken it away from a Waterford beach.

10-year-old Aoife Ni Niocaill thought she had seen the last of her Go Games football when it was lost to the sea at Woodstown beach near Dunmore East.

But incredibly, a local in the Wales village of Llanrhystud found the ball washed up on a beach, and used Facebook to find the owner.

"If anyone knows Aoife Ni Niocaill, her football’s just washed up on Llanrhystud beach - west Wales! Wonder how long it’s taken to get here from Ireland?," Aline Denton wrote.

And as the post picked up thousands of likes and shares, Aoife's dad Ruairi got in touch and revealed that the ball had been lost some seven days earlier.

The ball travelled over 200 km around the coast of Wexford and then across the Irish Sea to land on the Welsh coast.

"I'm Aoife's dad, she's 10-years-old and she lost her ball on Woodstown Beach in Co. Waterford last Sunday," Ruairi Mac Niocaill replied.

"It went in the water as the tide was going out and all we could do was watch it drift away. I showed her the picture you posted - she thinks she's famous now!".

The original poster added: "The post has reached Aoife's dad. Aoife lost her football near Waterford 7 days ago. Thanks to everyone who shared the post!".
