Waterford FC announce former Ireland star Kevin Sheedy as new boss

Former Republic of Ireland and Everton star Kevin Sheedy is the new manager of Waterford FC.

The Blues had been quiet since the end of the League of Ireland season last month having narrowly missed out on a European place - before announcing the left-field appointment this evening and promising a number of new signings in the coming days.

Everton legend Sheedy, 60, won 46 caps and scored nine times for Ireland, including famously netting the equaliser against England at the 1990 World Cup.

He was caretaker-manager of Tranmere Rovers for a brief stint in 2001 following a spell as assistant boss and went on to manage Everton's Under-18 side.

Sheedy was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012 but successfully fought the illness and recovered to full health.

This will be the former midfielder's first full-time role in management. His most recent post was as coach of the Al Shabab FC youth team in Saudi Arabia.

Sheedy will be assisted by his ex-Toffees team-mate and former Hartlepool, Luton and Grimsby boss Mike Newell - a Premier League winner with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 who also worked with Sheedy in Saudi Arabia.

Waterford parted company with another former Ireland international after just eight games in charge last season, when John Sheridan left to take the reins at Wigan Athletic.

Fran Rockett took charge until the end of the season, guiding the Blues to a fifth-placed finish.
