Waterford at war with St Pat's as Saints try to block Blues from Europe

St. Pat's and Waterford are at war after the Saints tried to block the Blues from playing in Europe.

The Inchicore outfit outlined their gripes in a letter to interim FAI chief executive Rea Walshe.

In it, Saints owner/chairman Garrett Kelleher reveals that his club has sought legal advice on the matter.

Waterford qualified for this summer’s Europa League after finishing fourth in the league last season, one spot ahead of St Pat’s.

But Saints believe their Premier Division rivals are not eligible as the club is technically less than three years in existence.

That is one of UEFA’s criteria for granting European licenses and reformed Derry City were stripped of their Europa League spot in 2012 due to the three-year stipulation.

Waterford reformed as a new company in November 2016 with new owner Lee Power wiping the club’s debts at the time.

But Waterford refused to comment on the matter tonight, or on a suggestion that other creditors may still exist.

St Pat’s primary beef is on the ‘three-year’ issue and Saints have now made their own submission for a European licence after fulfilling a wide variety of criteria.

An FAI statement read: “The FAI can confirm it is in receipt of a letter from St Patrick’s Athletic in relation to UEFA Club Licensing and is looking into the matter.

In February, league chief Fran Gavin said: “Waterford will go through the process that Derry went through with UEFA where they have to make a case for licensing.

“They are a new entity but at the moment we don't see any significant issues around Waterford that would prohibit them from getting a licence.”

Asked at the time if he thought that would be acceptable to UEFA, Gavin said: “Absolutely, yeah.”
