Waterford appoint Ian Hendon to coaching staff after Marc Bircham sacking

Ian Hendon has joined Waterford’s coaching staff in time for Friday's vital promotion-relegation playoff decider with UCD.

The Blues were scrambling for cover in the dugout after sacking manager Marc Bircham in a remarkable chain of events yesterday.

Hendon, 49, is a former Tottenham, Leyton Orient, Notts County, Northampton Town and Sheffield Wednesday player and won seven England Under-21 caps.

As a coach, the Englishman was part of Sam Allardyce’s first-team staff at West Ham and also managed Barnet, Dover Athletic and Leyton Orient.

His most recent job was as manager of Europa Point in Gibraltar.

A Waterford FC statement today read: “Ian will support Dave Bell, the staff and players who are united as a collective in preparing for Friday’s match.”
