Water tests confirm 'elevated levels of contamination' at south Dublin beach

The bathing ban is set to continue at a south Dublin beach after a test showed "elevated levels of contamination".

Lab analysis of the water in Merrion Strand have confirmed the contamination which led to the bathing ban on June 10.

Further samples have now been taken from the beach with the results expected back on Monday July 15.

Dublin City Council said: "Laboratory analysis results for a bathing water sample taken at Merrion Strand on Sunday 7th July 2019 have confirmed elevated levels of contamination.

"In compliance with EPA guidance,  a temporary bathing prohibition was issued 10th June for Merrion Strand.

"A further sample will be taken tomorrow with results being available on Monday 15th July."

Latest Water Quality Report

Merrion Strand has been poor for the last four years - if it rates poor again next year it will no longer be classified as a bathing area until quality improves.

An EPA report released in May said the strand's main problem is two polluted streams flowing into the beach.

The Elm Park and Trimleston streams have been polluted by a combination of misconnections, leaks, spills, and overflow from wastewater collections systems according to Dublin City Council.

Both DCC and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown are working to solve the issue.

On June 26, an overflow from the Ringsend Sewage Plant was also feared to have had an effect on Merrion's water quality with seven other beaches also being slapped with a bathing ban as precaution.
