Water taxis could be coming to the Mersey to ferry commuters around the city

Water taxis could one day use the Mersey as part of a plan to make the most of the Liverpool's waterfront position.

A document city councillors will consider next week recommends boats be used to encourage North to South travel down the Mersey as one of many measures to increase the usage of the waterfront.

The so-called strategic regeneration framework is set to be agreed by the council's cabinet next Friday.

It aims to provide a direction for how the council want the city centre to look and feel in the long term and help it shape the type of development that happens in the area.

It makes a number of recommendations to ensure the city centre is better connected and more attractive, as well as encouraging high quality development.

And there are a number of proposals within the framework to try to ensure the city makes the most of its waterfront heritage.

The document says: "As the waterfront develops further, the provision
of water taxis to encourage north/south movement through the docks should be explored subject to no significant effects on sensitive habitats."

As well as the water taxis, the SRF encourages the council to consider a potential new waterfront entrance for James Street station.

Other recommendations include improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists across the rest of the city centre and work on key roads like Old Hall Street to make them more attractive.

The SRF for the city centre follows similar documents for the nearby Ten Streets and the Baltic Triangle.

If approved by the cabinet it should become a supplementary document to the council's local plan, which is set to come into force next autumn.
