Water supply problems continue in Delhi; Yamuna's level at Wazirabad lower than required normal

New Delhi: Several parts of the national capital continued to face water shortages, as the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) water productions remains affected, officials said on Monday.

Despite rainfall and efforts to get extra water from Haryana, the water situation remains bleak, as DJB reported producing around 960-950 million gallons per day (MGD) of water, which is around 40 MGD less than the summer target of 1,000 MGD.

"There has been a minor increase in flow in the Yamuna, but the shortfall remains, as the production is around 960 MGD of water. Attempts are being made to improve the water production," a senior DJB officer said.

For nearly a month now, DJB's two major water treatment plants - Wazirabad and Chandrawal - have reduced water production due to low raw water supply, leading to several areas facing problems.

The level of Yamuna at Wazirabad remains low at around 669.5 feet against the required normal of 674.5 feet.

Till the time the water levels rise to normal levels in the river, the water treatment plants are likely to face low production, he added.

According to government officials, talks are ongoing with the neighbouring Haryana government to increase raw water supply.

"Situation at Chandrawal WTP is improving and the water production might be restored to normalcy in the next two to three days," an official said.

The Wazirabad WTP has an average capacity of producing 131 MGD, while Chandrawal produces 94 MGD on average. A 25-30 per cent reduction in both their capacity has brought down the overall water production of the DJB.

Meanwhile, the DJB has installed an 'Online Water Analyzer' in Gulmohar Park area as a pilot project, for real-time monitoring of water quality, DJB vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay said on Monday.

The move follows several complaints from local residents of contaminated water being supplied by the DJB.

"An online water analyser has been installed on a trial basis which will help check any contamination at its source. In one week there will also be facility to send out alerts on mobile phones to residents if there is an increase in TDS, PH levels and related contaminations," Upadhayay further said.

According to the vice-chairman, the analyser has been installed at the Gulmohar Park colony's gate number 2 to monitor any contamination at the start, he added.

Areas affected include Civil Lines, Hindu Rao Hospital, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pahar Ganj and NDMC areas and parts of Cantonment and adjoining areas. The DJB has not given a timeline as to when the situation will improve.
