Water safety warning issued to young swimmers following tragic death of Louth teenager Jill Amante

A safety warning has been issued to young swimmers as they are being urged to be aware of rip-tides and to know what to look out for.

This comes after the tragic passing of a teenage girl at Termonfecknin Beach near Drogheda, Co Louth on Friday.

14 year-old Jill Amante was swimming in the sea with friends at Seapoint Beach when she got into difficulty after getting caught up in a strong current.

Rescue crew spotted Jill in the water and winched her on board the helicopter. She was then taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead.

Roger Sweeney from Water Safety Ireland wants people to be more aware of the fact that young people and children can be vulnerable even in shallow water.

"We've had 30 child drownings in 10 years - that's 30 children drowned under 14 years of age," he told the Irish Examiner.

"They can drown quickly and silently in relatively shallow water as well, so please keep an eye on them.

"If they're quiet, don't take it that means they're ok. Drowning isn't always the splashing and waving call for help we see on TV programmes. It's quite silent."
