Water gushes through Old Swan amid efforts to repair burst 36 inch pipe

Two of Old Swan's busiest roads have become rivers today as water continues to flood from a burst water main.

The incident began on Saturday night and remains ongoing this afternoon.

Dramatic images and video show Derby Lane and Prescot Road under water as efforts to deal with the burst pipe continue.

A section of road is reported to have collapsed near the junction, where a major pipe - understood to be 36 inches in diameter - has burst.

Maintenance workers are on the scene and United Utilities has told the ECHO everything is being done to solve the issue.

Water has been diverted to the area through other pipes and tankers in a bid to retain the supply to homes in the area.

Bus routes have been affected, with Merseytravel advising services that go through the area are now subject to diversions.

Prescot Road is closed to traffic in both directions, between Booth Street and Tesco, and a cordon has been put in place around the area where work is ongoing.

It is not clear how long the issue will take to resolve.
